 IGUASSU FALLS

The Iguassu Falls were formed about 150.000.000 ago and they are located inside Iguassu National Park, with their 275 falls that compose a unique sight in times of high waters. The greatest falls are in a total of 19, from which only three are on the Brazilian side (Floriano, Deodoro and Benjamin Constant).

The word Iguassu means "big water" in the Tupi-Guarani language. The river is born close to Serra do Mar and flows over 1320 km to its estuary, emptying in Paraná river

.

After a large curve and a rapid, the main part of the Falls goes down laterally in a deep erosion crack, making up the Devil’s Throat. The best vision of these falls is on the Brazilian side. The placement of the falls – most of them facing Brazil – allows the complete vision of all of them only on the Brazilian side.

The Iguassu river is 1.200m large over the Falls, narrowing to 65m - 100m in the tectonic bottom that makes the talvague. The Brazilian side is 800m wide and the Argentinean, 1.900m, adding to a total width of 2.700m.

There is an unevenness of 72m, including a 3m rapid over the falls; which depends on the river’s outflow, the amount of falls vary from 150 to 275 and their height vary from 40 to 90 meters. The river’s outflow is 300 m3/s in dry periods and 6.500 m3/s in abundance, with an average of 1.500 m3/s.
